biography

Recipient of the 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant, American pianist Mackenzie Melemed is redefining what it means to be a classical musician in the 21st century. Drawing on world-class pianism and a magnetic stage presence shaped since childhood, he brings audiences closer to the music in performances where stories, sounds, and shared moments resonate long after the final note. With playing praised for its “color, intention, and expressive power,” Melemed pairs refined artistry with personal storytelling and thoughtful curation to expand audiences’ sense of what a piano recital can be.

Hailed by The New York Times as “an excellent young pianist,” Melemed had already given more than 500 performances by age 13, gaining unusually extensive stage experience from an early age. Born in Massachusetts, he began piano studies at age four and soon began performing weekly for senior citizens. At five, he appeared nationally on The Rosie O’Donnell Show; by nine, he was headlining a 60-show run at the Tropicana Resort in Atlantic City. From 2004 to 2008, he performed annually at the White House Holiday Open House celebrations, formative experiences that helped shape his ease on stage and instinct for direct audience connection.

A laureate of the 2021 American Pianists Awards and the 1st China International Music Competition, Melemed was the only pianist to receive a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant. He has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, Edmonton Symphony, Polish Radio Orchestra, and KBS Symphony, and has performed at major venues and festivals across North America, Europe, and Asia.

A Steinway Artist and graduate of The Juilliard School, where he earned his BM, MM, and Artist Diploma while studying with Robert McDonald and Emanuel Ax, Melemed is especially drawn to music just beyond the standard canon. Alongside the classical and Romantic core repertoire, he champions lesser-known works, rarely performed concerti, and new music. His debut album, Tulevaisuus—Finnish for “future”—pairs Bach, Brahms, and Liszt with new works by Sir Stephen Hough, Laura Kaminsky, and Avner Dorman, each inspired by those earlier composers.

Melemed is currently touring Keys Across America, an all-American recital project celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary. Spanning more than 50 cities, the tour explores nearly two centuries of American piano music and includes new works written for him by Kaminsky and Dorman.

Since 2020, Melemed has been based in Finland. His success at the 2017 Maj Lind International Piano Competition, together with his fluency in Finnish from Columbia University language studies, helped launch a major performance career there, with invitations from nearly all of Finland’s orchestras and many of its leading festivals. Former teachers include Dean Arvidson, Alexander Korsantia, Olga Rogach, and William Smiddy.
